Alexi Giannoulias has spent his career proving that government can work better.
As Illinois Secretary of State,
Alexi has transformed one of the nation’s largest and most visible state offices by modernizing outdated technology, cutting DMV wait times, expanding online services, improving customer service, protecting civil rights, and strengthening public safety. His administration has made government more accessible, more accountable, and more responsive to the people it serves.
Alexi entered office with a commitment to restore trust in government, signing a sweeping executive ethics order to increase transparency and strengthen protections for employees and the public. Under his leadership, the Secretary of State’s office has launched innovative programs like Skip-the-Line appointments, expanded mobile DMV services, opened senior-focused service centers, and dramatically reduced the time tax Illinoisans once paid simply to access basic government services.
Alexi championed landmark legislation to improve road safety, combat distracted driving, protect women’s healthcare privacy, reduce discriminatory traffic stops, combat auto theft, and defend the freedom to read by signing Illinois’ first-in-the-nation Right to Read law protecting public libraries from book bans.
The son of Greek immigrants
Alexi grew up in Chicago learning the values of hard work, perseverance, and service. He earned a degree in economics from Boston University, a law degree from Tulane University, and spent two years playing professional basketball in Greece before returning home to build his career in public service.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Alexi is the CEO & Founder of Annoula Ventures, which invests in start-ups.
Alexi graduated cum laude from Boston University with a degree in economics and earned a law degree from Tulane University’s School of Law. Alexi formerly served on the board of directors of the Community Banker’s Association, and as Vice-President of Broadway Bank in Chicago.
He lives in Chicago with his wife, Josephine, and their four daughters.
